Insulin and diabetes go hand in hand. It is because insulin plays a crucial role in the management of blood sugar levels. Usage of reliable insulin like lantus insulin forms a critical part of diabetes treatment. Insulin can be created genetically or extracted from sources like pork. Not all insulin is of the same variety. Significant types of insulins are –

  • Rapid-acting insulin – This type of insulin starts showing its effects within few minutes of getting injected into the diabetic patient and its effect last for few hours.
  • Regular or short-acting insulin – Post getting injected into the bloodstream, this type of insulin starts showing its effect after 30 to 40 minutes and lasts for about three to six hours.
  • Intermediate-acting – This type of insulin takes some time to show effect like two to four hours, but its effect remains on the body for about 18 hours.
  • Long lasting – This insulin takes maximum time, e., six to ten hours before jumping into action, but its effect lasts for about 24 hours.

The type of insulin that bests suits a particular patient is prescribed by the doctor after understanding the patient’s history, his diabetic condition, level of severity, etc.

Role of insulin in the body

The crucial role of insulin in diabetes therapy can be better understood if we understand the role insulin plays in our body. The vital role played by insulin in our body is –

  • Regulation of sugar in the bloodstream – Insulin plays a critical role in keeping the glucose balance within a specified normal range in the bloodstream. Post digestion of food, they are released as glucose into the bloodstream. The pancreas then releases insulin which helps supply glucose to all tissues for their energy requirement.
  • Storage of excess glucose – We already know that insulin helps maintain blood glucose levels. Once all the tissues have taken up required glucose, it is insulin which helps the liver store this excess glucose as glycogen. This is again converted back to glucose to meet energy requirements in the period between two meals when the blood glucose starts dipping.

People have diabetes when their pancreas fails to produce enough insulin to help the body keep the blood sugar at appropriate levels. In the advanced stages, the body starts developing a resistance to the insulin action which causes further complication in the body. Managing and treating diabetes at the right time with proper insulin treatment helps the patient lead a healthy life.
