The liver is the largest internal organ and is responsible for keeping toxins out of the bloodstream. It is also the only organ that can regenerate itself, and hence, someone can donate a part of their liver and live as normally as possible as the organ gets back to its size. Caring for your liver is important, because more often than not, liver conditions are not detected and diagnosed at an early stage. In this post, we have 7 tips for keeping your liver healthy.

  • Get immunized. If you talk to any of the known digestive and liver disease consultants, they will always advise to get vaccinated for viral infections – Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. This is one of the best preventive steps you can take for your liver, especially if you are someone who travels frequently from one country to other.

  • Maintain your weight. Obesity is one of the major causes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, simply known as fatty liver. Even losing a few kilos can make a huge difference for the organ’s health.
  • Eat right. It may sound cliché, but eating right is important for your liver. Avoid refined carbohydrates to the extent you can and keep all kinds of saturated fats away from your regular meals. Check your calorie count, and if you are over 40, talk to your dietician for a list of dos and don’ts.

  • You need more water. Yes, you heard that right. Water allows the liver and kidneys to function properly, and you should try and have at least 12 glasses of water each day. Keep a check on your urine color, which can be a sign of dehydration.
  • Avoid alcohol when you can. Alcohol is bad for the liver – period. It is also the prime cause of alcoholic liver disease, which can eventually lead to a condition called cirrhosis that is not treatable. Some patients, especially those with high cholesterol and diabetes, should avoid alcohol completely.

  • Keep a check on the toxins. Do not use steroids and drugs that are not verified or legal. There are many toxins that come from different chemicals around us, which can eventually damage the liver. Keep a check on aerosols and always wear a mask if you are using such products.
  • Practice safe sex. Did you know that unprotected sex may cause hepatitis B and hepatitis C? These are viral infections that spread through body fluids and blood.
